How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store.
